Omaha Variations

If you have chosen to learn the game of Omaha (which is actually a bit more challenging than Texas Hold ‘Em on some levels), then you should also know the variations of the game. Here is a list, and what you need to look for:

Pot-limit Omaha: Sounds much like what you would imagine- a player’s bet is limited to whatever is in the pot. Other than that, the regular rules of Omaha apply- you must use two of your hole cards and three community cards to make your best five-card hand. The smallest bet you can make is equal to whatever the big blind is. But you are always limited to the pot size for the max bet, therefore there is no going all-in.

Omaha Hi/Lo:

This is also referred to as Omaha 8, Omaha8, or Omaha/8. The rules here are a little more complicated than your typical Omaha game. Basically, Hi-Lo gives a pot reward to both the best and worst hand at the table, which can make it a very exciting variation. In order to ‘qualify’ for the low pot, you must have your five-card hand be five different numbers from 8s to Aces with no straights or flushes. The low pot qualifier who has the lowest of these ‘high’ cards is the winner of the pot. In the case of a tie, the pot is split. The high pot hand is played the same as in regular Omaha, where the best five-card hand will always win. This can make for a very exciting time, as even a ‘bad’ hand that you would normally never call or bet with can still take home a pot. If nobody qualifies for the low hand, then the person with the high hand wins the entire pot.

Hi-Lo is played both in no-limit and limit games. For example, a $2/$4 limit Omaha Hi-Lo game means that their bets are in $2 increments. A no-limit one means that the minimum bet must be equal to the big blind but can be as much as all of a player’s chips for the max.

An Alternative to Hold'em

Many, many people have flocked to the internet to play in Texas Hold ‘Em games and tournaments. The no-limit game of this is the ME (Main Event) at the World Series of Poker and is televised and glorified to the hilt. For this reason, some people feel the game of Texas Hold ‘Em is over-exposed. Others may need a change of pace after the barrage of Hold ‘Em games, but still want to play cards. So what do you do in this case? You learn how to play Omaha.

The good news about Omaha is that you don’t even have to learn all that much- if you already know how to play Texas Hold ‘Em, you pretty much know how to play Omaha, with just a few differences. The hierarchy of hands remains the same for Omaha, and the flop, turn, and river are all the same as well. The difference here is in the number of hole cards that you are dealt. In a Hold ‘Em game, you are dealt two hole cards and can use one, two, or none of those cards to make your best five-card hand.

In Omaha, you are dealt four-hole cards. You are only allowed to use two of those four cards to make the best five-card hand possible. The other twist is that unlike Hold ‘Em, you can’t use any of the cards and only use the five community cards. You must use two of your hole cards and three community cards.

For instance, if you are playing Hold ‘Em and a straight end up on the board, the game is a wash, and the pot is split, unless a player has one hole card that can make a higher straight. This would never happen in Omaha- you must use two of your hole cards to make your hand.

Omaha takes some getting used to if you are used to Holding ‘Em. Having to figure out your best hand from four cards instead of two takes some practice and getting used to. Also, it can be frustrating if you are dealt three of the same card, and can only use two of them as a pair. But for this reason, it can also be a fun and exciting alternative to Texas Hold ‘Em.
